MacroSpan is a lightweight, long-span structural system conceived and developed by John Macartney.
The applications for Macrospan are:
- Covered stadiums and other sporting facilities
- Large theatres
- Industrial buildings and markets
- Aircraft hangars
- Water reservoirs
- Portable/demountable structures
- Emergency shelter
On suitable sites the structure and attachments can be fully assembled on the ground, without the need for large cranes, and drawn to its final position by stressing. Where this cannot be done a procedure has been developed for erecting the structure directly in its final position.
The above image shows a concept for retrofitting a retractable roof onto an existing tennis stadium for 15,000 people - all based upon Macrospan.
