Automation of rack safety inspection based on the new standard (AS 4084-2012) is yet another example of how inspection software has been used to streamline safety audits and provide both time and cost benefits. Steel racking is usually used in warehouses and factories to store heavy items such as pallets of goods.

Given the amount of weight that the racks are required to support, the steel frames are susceptible to stress which could cause the racks to collapse. It is mandatory for all businesses using steel racks to regularly check the racks for signs of stress to ensure that workers are safe and to comply with legislation.

As with other processes which have been automated by inspection software, the steel rack inspection checklist based on the new standard can be replicated in electronic form, so that inspections can be conducted on a mobile device such as a PDA, smart phone or a tablet.

Example of checks that can be carried are: upright damages, baseplates and floor fixing,(e.g. check that a minimum of two ground anchors are in use where forklifts are used in the warehouse), horizontal and diagonal braces, and the beam loads (eg. connectors, safety locks, stress, deformation etc).

Non conform results including the picture of the defect are sent from the mobile device to a central database for storage and for producing reports.

Reports include: corrective action, notification of defects and colour coded non-compliance reports (ie. green, amber, red, blue).

Certain mobile devices will allow for photographs of the defect areas on the racks to be captured and attached to reports. Voice recordings can be made with each inspection and steel racks can be identified using RFID or barcodes to save time for the inspector.

Inspection reports are accessible from any desktop computer linked to the database or by web access.

Racking safety inspection software totally eliminates paper-work from the inspection process and allows inspectors to conduct more inspections in shorter amount of time without losing time on data entry in the office or searching the paperwork for defects and non-compliance racks.
