New products from CTS Wireless Components provide timely examples of how CTS’ leadership in wireless component handset technology is providing new opportunities for wireless handset and modem manufacturers.

Earlier this year, CTS Wireless announced a cooperative
design with a manufacturer of nonrechargeable wireless
handsets that will offer phone service in varying blocks
of prepaid minutes. The design provides a low-cost
ceramic duplexer solution for 800 MHz CDMA (Code
Division Multiple Access) and AMPS (American Mobile
Phone System) applications. Ceramic is the only duplexer
technology capable of meeting the performance standard
of CDMA and AMPS RF systems, at a cost which is
unsurpassed in the market.
The cooperative design, model CER0046A, has typical
performance of better than 2.0 dB on transmitting
insertion loss and 3.0 dB on receiving insertion loss, at
a lower cost than competing technologies. CTS also
recently announced a second, reduced size duplexer
(Model CER0057) for the same manufacturer’s next
generation of cell phones.
The patented CTS ceramic monoblock technology is key
to providing competitive, low-cost solutions for prepaid
handset programs. Several handset manufacturers are
eyeing a growing market of cost-conscious consumers
and families with children looking for economical
alternatives to a monthly wireless phone bill. According
to The Yankee Group, a market research firm, the
number of wireless customers in the United States
using some form of “prepaid service” is expected to
double by the year 2005.
Duplexer Shrunk for Next Generation
Meanwhile, the market for wireless data transmission
is also growing and CTS has applied its ceramic
monoblock technology to create a new, miniature
receive filter for North American personal communication
system CDMA applications.
This smaller new filter (Model CER0059A) measures only
7mm x 5.5m x 3.8mm and is designed for the tight
space requirements of high data rate (HDR) wireless
modem terminals, including laptops, PDAs and handsets
using CDMA 1x technology.
HDR capability is central to 2.5G and 3G CDMA networks
that promise to deliver mobile, real-time multimedia services.
A Gartner Dataquest report estimates 15.1 million
mobile data-only devices will be shipped in 2004, with
mobile data-only devices increasing at an annual rate in
double-digit figures.
All three ceramic filters were developed by an experienced
design engineering team and fully supported with highvolume
manufacturing operations in both North America
and Asia. Since the inception of the patented monoblock
duplexer design, CTS Wireless Components has shipped
more than 100 million ceramic duplexer filters.
