Using a backing-paper-free labelling material, the new Avery 81x Label Printer Applicator (LPA) radically reduces energy and material use, hence waste, for carton, tray and pallet labelling — at a lower total applied cost.
Matthews Australasia will launch the new Avery Dennison 81x Label Printer Applicator (LPA) at Auspack PLUS, which begins Tuesday (May 7) at the Sydney Showgrounds.
The innovative 81x LPA uses a backing-paper-free label material for carton, tray and pallet labels via LightSmartTM Technology.
The LightSmart label material does not need backing paper, which traditional pressure-sensitive labels do. Coated on the reverse with a non-tack adhesive, LightSmart labels become sticky through heat activation after the print and cut. This is a key differentiator to existing linerless LPA solutions. (The material can even withstand high-temperature warehousing; it only activates in the 81x LPA.)
Matthews' general manager of operations, Mark Dingley, says: "Another key difference is the flexibility manufacturers have to print different-length labels, because the material is on one roll that can be cut to the desired length, thus maximising material use.
"This also lets manufacturers change message lengths 'on-the-fly', so they can create marketing messages or simply change label formats without worrying about changing the label stock. It also reduces supply SKUs, as only one roll is needed for different label lengths."
Being backing paper-free eliminates an entire waste stream, and hence disposal costs, and expensive silicones and liner materials, energy and assets from traditional labelling.
Further benefits are in more labels in the same roll diameter than traditional pressure sensitive labels: 60 per cent for 300mm and even more on 350mm, resulting in 2.1 times longer machine uptime; significantly fewer roll changes are needed; vastly reduced operator material-handling (due to fewer roll changes); reduced material and ribbon use (so lower consumable costs); and fewer rolls need to be kept in stock, reducing logistical tasks and space needed, thus saving money.
Dingley says the 81x LPA is well suited to secondary packaging (such as cartons and shrink trays) with content and shipping labels. He lists its benefits to manufacturers: increased productivity and flexibility, with more uptime and less disturbances, thus enhanced performance; improved efficiency, thus increased savings; and a reduced environmental impact, which elevates a company's brand as being environmentally responsible and sustainable.
Dingley says: "We chose to launch the new 81x LPA at Auspack Plus because it is Australasia's leading tradeshow. Dingley gives an example of how using the LightSmart material leads to significant reductions in water and energy use, solid waste production and CO2 emissions, compared with conventional pressure sensitive labels.
"If users switch 100,000m2 — which is approximately 6,700,000 labels in format A6 (100x150mm) — of pressure-sensitive labelling materials to the LPA 81x, they have the potential to cut water usage in half, energy usage by a quarter and their waste footprint by 65 per cent — all with no increase in carbon footprint."
