Wind speed frequently goes through gusts and lulls, but if this natural fluctuating wind speed isn’t managed sufficiently it can result in wasted renewable energy and, a lack of operational efficiency and poor power quality leading to supply outages.

This can particularly be seen in wind/diesel systems, as fluctuations in wind energy have to be balanced by the diesel generators.

Variations in wind energy are balanced against the efficient running of the diesel generator and this often results in the wind turbines not operating at their full potential along with increased fuel consumption and maintenance costs of the diesel generators.

PowerStore has managed to achieved high penetration (>90%) of wind power in substitution of diesel generation by smoothly absorbing energy in times of excess wind and delivering it when it’s needed.

This feature allows optimum efficiency of the diesel generators and maximised the wind energy input. The power station can now operate with a minimum number of diesel generators as PowerStore supplies real spinning reserve.

It is possible that the power station can have no diesel generators operating at all since PowerStore can provide frequency control and voltage control.

By providing a containerised solution, the modular design of PowerStore enables an unlimited number of PowerStore units to be connected in parallel. Power output of single units range from 250kW to 1MW.

The energy contained in each PowerStore system can be adapted to site specific needs. The containerised solution also allows the system to be retrofitted into another application after the completion of the project.

The Flores Island is two hours flying time off the Portugal coast in the Azores and is powered by diesel generators, a hydro power plant and wind turbines.

The wind turbine were installed by the local utility, Electricity de Açores (EDA), to reduce diesel generation costs, but, EDA had to limit the amount of wind power injected into the system to avoid power fluctuations and blackouts.

Powercorp installed one PowerStore flywheel energy storage system to maximise the wind penetration on the island.

The PowerStore flywheel now smoothes out the wind power fluctuations and allows the operator to run the power station without any diesel generators online.
