The phrase "keeping the environment out of fuel and fuel out of the environment" was first uttered as a joke to the HYDAC marketing team, but the meaning was so clear it was haunting.
If fuel users did, in fact, keep dirt, water, and microorganisms out of diesel fuel, they would go a long way to reducing the amount of emissions and unburnt fuel going out into the environment.
Countless studies have shown that reducing contamination in fuel improves the efficiency of engines, saves fuel, reduces downtime and saves money. Despite this, the same fuel maintenance practices that were developed years ago, before the industry realised that the removal of contaminants was beneficial, are still being used today.
One way of improving fuel maintenance is becoming aware of contamination – ensuring it is accurately measured, whether it is a liquid or particulate. Particulate contamination in fuel can be measured easily by the application of in-line particle counting using, equipment such as the HYDAC CS1000.
The CS1000 determines cleanliness levels and ensures that fuel being dispensed meets required cleanliness targets set by engine manufacturers. It can be programmed to provide real-time monitoring and measurement of cleanliness levels and to switch off power or raise an alarm in the event that contamination is detected.
Particulate contamination can be removed from diesel fuel efficiently and economically by utilising HYDAC’s Depth Filtration media – it can provide the cleanliness level required by most engine OEM’s in a single pass, but is designed not to remove some of the fuel’s other important properties. Depth filtration by HYDAC provides sufficient cleanliness without stripping valuable fuel components or additives, such as those added to ultra low-sulphur fuels at the dispensing point.
The removal of liquid contamination from diesel is often carried out by large vessels that provide some degree of successful separation, or coalescing. But sometimes this is not a viable technique, due to the levels of particulate filtration that are required to protect the coalescers themselves and prevent them from becoming expensive filters.
Through the development of new technology, solutions now exist to allow for on-board water removal products that are far superior to separator elements. HYDAC offers a range of water removal technologies such as Diesel Pre-Care, designed for on-board treatment of both particulate and liquid contamination of diesel fuels.
