True hand to eye co-ordination achieved by rml's p255i robotic case packer
rml Pty Ltd, a New Zealand based automation equipment OEM, have successful completed the installation of three new rml p255i integrated robotic top load packers into the food industry. With an existing wide range of erecting and packaging solutions developed through 25 years of operation, the rml p255i is a new and unique packer incorporating both proven high speed continuous motion e196 RSC erecting with top loading robotic packing equipment. The result is a highly flexible, high speed packing solution in a small footprint.
The rml p255i is a fully continuous motion design where RSC's are plucked, folded and inserted into a carton transfer conveyor in continuous motion. Encoders provide real time feedback to the robots as to precisely where the product and the packaging is at all time, so that the rml p255i will pack product into the RSC case in concert with the conveyor motion. This ability together with vision guidance on the product infeed allows the robots to seek and gather product in whatever orientation or position it arrives at.
"Effectively this represents the achievement of true hand to eye (or camera) co-ordination" says rml Australian Sales Manager, Russell Speechley. "We have designed our system to get the maximum efficiency and speed out of the robots and the erector, while maintaining the reliability and smooth performance of a continuous motion machine". The vision guidance system", says Russell "offers the capability to perform other functions such as quality inspection or sorting if required".
All three rml p255i packers delivered were configured for different products including blocks and flexible bags, and incorporated robots from the ABB range, where robot model selection was determined by the required speed and packing configurations. The systems are achieving in excess of 120 bags per minute in a lay down shingled format, and shelf ready stand up orientations are also possible." An exciting development" says Russell," is our system which incorporates both a vision guided ABB flexi-picker and an ABB IRB 240 together in the same machine frame. This is a real head-tuner in terms of flexibility and we see it represents the cutting edge in case packing technology".
While developed for the food industry these systems are adaptable for many RSC carton top-loading packaging scenarios." We have clients" says Russell, " asking us for solutions for ice cream applications where high speed interleaving is required, shelf ready pet food sachets and a number of pharmaceutical applications. The interest in our robotic solutions as a result of these developments has really taken off".
