Tokai University Team recently took Second Place in the World-Class Solar Car Race.
Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013 was held from 6 Oct to 10 Oct in Australia.
A total of 43 teams from 24 countries departed Darwin aiming to be the first to arrive in Adelaide, roughly 3000 km to the south. This year's race was the first to require the use of four-wheeled solar cars and have a bigger driver's seat.
The Tokai University team finished in 20th in a preliminary round and pulled off a stunning comeback in the race.
The Tokai University team overcame obstacles such as harsh weather conditions. Where some of its competitors were forced to retire midway, the team was able stay strong and complete the race.
The Tokai team wasn't able to defeat a team from The Netherlands, Nuon Solar Team, who was competing for championship in the past two races, but crossed the finish line in second place.
The team members were proud to complete the race even they could not achieve the goal of winning their third consecutive race.
Professor Hideki Kimura of Tokai University, advisor to the solar car team, commented: "Our solar car could cross the finish line after running 3000 km with teamwork and the students' efforts. I can only say thanks and congratulations to them."
Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013, a world-class solar car race
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is a time-based race covering a distance of about 3000km from Darwin in the north, down to Adelaide in southern Australia. A total of 40 teams from 23 countries participated in the race this year.
Inaugurated in 1987, the World Solar Challenge continues to showcase the development of advanced automotive technology and promote alternatives to conventional vehicle engines. Today, while solar cars test the ultimate boundaries of energy efficiency, they also provide incredible insights into the capabilities of everyday vehicle technology.
Utilising no more than six square metres of solar panels, the race sees some of the world's brightest young minds coming together to test and promote the ultimate synergy of nature, motion and innovation.
