The SIMATIC S7-300 PLC range for system solutions focusing on manufacturing technology has been further enhanced by the new high performance CPU 319-3 PN/DP. This CPU sets new standards for processing speeds and is the first S7-300 CPU with three communication ports: One combined MPI/PROFIBUS-DP port, one pure PROFIBUS-DP port and one PROFINET port. In addition, the 319 CPU features new functions such as isochrone mode on PROFIBUS, time interrupts to 500µs, 256 connectable IO devices, extended open communication on Ethernet and clock synchronization via NTP on Ethernet. More complex, high speed machines can now be achieved with the S7-300 platform, substantially reducing the cost of the automation system.

The new CPU 319-3 PN/DP sets new standards with respect to PLC and communication performance. Compared to today's CPU 317, the new CPU 319 processes user programs faster by a factor of 5 to 10. Processing times of down to 10 ns are achieved for bit operations. The increase in processing speed is matched by a large program memory of 1.4Mb. Like other CPUs in the S7-300 range this is fully retentive through the required Micro Memory Card, making this CPU batteryless and maintenance free.Until now this level of performance has only been available in much larger and more expensive systems.

The 319 CPU features 3 communications interfaces: MPI/PROFIBUS, PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
PROFIBUS is the leading fieldbus worldwide, supporting a wide range of devices and functions on a single highspeed bus. In addition to the standard functionality, the 319 CPUs onboard PROFIBUS port supports isochrone mode. Isochrone mode is a synchronous link between the PLC and the PROFIBUS network with a constant bus cycle time. This has the following adavantages:
- a fast, time-based, reproducible (deterministic) response
- enables applications where sensors, actuators and drives must be absolutely synchronised to be achieved over PROFIBUS
PROFINET Component-based Automation (CBA)
The CBA functionality of the 319 CPUs integrated PROFINET port permits technological modularization of machines and systems with significant advantages: Plants can be better standardized and more easily expanded or re-used. This enables a quick and flexible response to customer requirements and shortens and simplifies commissioning by permitting pre-testing at component level.
PROFINET IO is based on Industrial Ethernet and permits the connection of distributed field and I/O devices to the CPU.Compared to the existing PROFINET CPUs (315-2PN/DP, 317-2PN/DP), the CPU 319-3PN/DP offers significantly better performance on PROFINET-IO. The CPU 319 is fully compatible with the new generation S7-300 CPUs (with Micro Memory Card and without backup battery). The 319 CPU is capable of replacing existing S7 318-2DP CPUs in most cases. Further information on this can be found at
The new 319 CPU can be configured with STEP 7 from version 5.4. An HSP file can downloaded from the internet to permit configuration of this CPU in Step 7 version 5.3 SP3. Configuration of the CPU with older STEP7 versions is not possible.
