PROFIBUS has long since offered this feature with PROFIsafe, and PROFINET is now following suit. PROFIsafe is used as the profile. Networking possibilities including wireless are expanded with the Ethernet backbone. More uniformity. More flexibility. Typical of Totally Integrated Automation.

Functions of Safety Communication over Ethernet (PROFINET Safety):

PROFINET Safety over Ethernet uses the approved PROFIsafe communication Profile. With the built in CRC checks and safe monitoring times, communications can be safely achieved over cables, Fibre optics and now wirelessly with 8011 compliant hardware such as the Scalance range of industrial Ethernet Switches and wireless access points and clients. PROFIsafe on PROFINET is approved to the same high standards as on PROFIBUS i.e. EN954-1 Category 4 (Equivalent to AS4024) and IEC 61508 SIL3.

New Hardware now available for PROFINET Safety:

With the new PROFINET Technology comes a range of new CPUs, Interface Modules and I/Os.

CPU 315F-2PN/DP, CPU 317F-2PN/DP

The new CPUs have both Profibus DP and Profinet interfaces. You can connect directly into an existing PROFIBUS DP network and have a PROFINET network simultaneously. Safety can be incorporated on both networks from the one CPU.

ET 200S

A new High Feature Interface Module (IM 151-HF PROFINET) is required to connect with PROFINET.
In conjunction with the IM is an updated Safe input module and Safe output module, both of which are backwards compatible with earlier versions and suitable for use with PROFIBUS Interface Modules also. In fact these new modules can be inserted in an existing PROFIBUS installation without the need to modify the hardware configuration. New power modules have also been released for PROFINET.
These new versions also incorporate single channel Passivation.


Existing ET200M I/O can be used when directly connected to the PROFINET CPU but no ET200M style Interface Module is available at this point for remote connection. Don?t forget that for category 4 applications a Safety Protector module is required to isolate the Safe I/O modules.


For IP65/67 applications ET200pro is available for Profinet with safety. This allows for direct connection of field devices without the need for control cabinets, thus reducing number of interconnections and allowing for smallest possible footprint whilst being water resistant.

Distributed Safety Software V5.4

With Distributed Safety version 5.4 the new modules and features are all available. An upgrade of Step 7 to version 5.3 SP3 is required.
