Safety plays key role in OneSteel warehouse redesign

A warehouse solution was required for bulk and broken pack storage of aluminum extrusion and to allow the Dandenong business to have more versatility in their storage and handling of product.

Meca Racking Solutions supplied a number of design and layout options and with OneSteel's input, refined the design to optimally suit their specific requirements. The end design of Cantilever racking took into consideration the make and model of forklift that OneSteel uses allowing specific aisle widths and technical and size characteristics that could be adjusted based on stocking requirements and load levels.

Safety was the number one priority during the installation process. A construction site was created to ensure safety of Meca and OneSteel staff working in close proximity. To ensure racking material did not over-crowd the construction site, material was delivered in three waves, which included the correct specific mix of material required for each stage of the installation. Meetings and briefings took place to ensure all Meca Racking installation personnel and OneSteel staff was aware of activities and movements over the three-week project installation period.

From Meca Racking Solutions Safe Work Method Statements to project story board containing safety information and procedures, project plans, schedules and project drawings, a safety focus was in place at all stages of the projects progress allowing representatives from the OneSteel organisation to view and see instantly the development of the project.

The project was completed four working days ahead of schedule and continues to improve OneSteel's efficiency and capabilities of their warehouse storage system.
