SmartGate provides eligible travellers arriving into Australia’s international airports the option to process themselves through passport control.

There has been a marked increase in the number of arrivals and departures at Australian international airports and further growth is expected into the future.

Current forecasts show the number of arrivals are expected to increase at an average annual rate of nearly 5% between 2006 and 2016. SmartGate will enable Customs to securely and simply process more travellers, while maintaining the existing standards of border security.

Australian Customs engaged Sagem Australasia as its strategic partner to design and build the solution.   Sagem in turn asked NeoProducts to develop the SmartGate kiosk.  SmartGate Series 1 is currently available for eligible Australian and New Zealand travellers arriving into Brisbane International Airport from overseas.

It will be progressively introduced into other major Australian international airports with Cairns, Sydney and Melbourne scheduled next.
