Success with LR300 for Egypt Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)

Mahmoud Elkatib, sales manager from MEEE Egypt commented: "Regarding the order of five units of LR300 medium-range IR thermometer through tender to check the connection of transmission line throughout Egypt."

"In pdf brochure it says that the emissivity is from 0.5 to 1.00, before we start the live test, the technical committee was confused because the emissivity of aluminium (unoxidised) is from 0.02 to 0.10 and oxidised aluminium conductor is from 0.2 to 0.4.

"But we come to know that the LR300 emissivity can be adjusted from 0.4 to 1.0, therefore we provided them with an official letter that the aluminium conductor will be oxidised and we assure then that we can achieve a pleasing result."

In the past, they used thermal cameras to check the connection temperature as their predictive maintenance program, but since the distance is 10-15 metres away, a low-cost thermal camera causes huge error in temperature at such a great distance, and a normal low-cost thermometer wouldn't achieve such accuracy.

High resolution thermal cameras are extremely expensive and are bulky and heavy to use. There are thousands of connections to check on a regular basis — therefore they require many units in the field.

"We have another 15 units on tender in the Upper Egypt Electrical Distribution Company (UEEDC), and we don't have competitors on this medium range IR," Elkatib said.

 Conclusion:

The live test of LR300 shows:

  1. Irtek LR300 performs much better and more accurately at a greater distance, especially 9 metres and above. This is what whole purpose is about — shooting the connection from a relative distance.
  2. Setting as 0.4 emissivity; the reading from LR300 is very consistent and accurate within the specification.
  3. The customer can afford to purchase more units/maintenance division, therefore increase their sales volume.
  4. No direct equivalent for this model — therefore less or simply no competition at this level
