After over 30 years of CAD design, paper-based archives have all but disappeared from design and engineering departments.
Paper production drawings still go to the shop floor and onsite, however every search through the archive and every change made is undertaken by accessing digital data.
The increase in sophistication and effectiveness of design technology has in turn created a large amount of design files. This ever-increasing amount of data becomes difficult to control efficiently and effectively.
Without a data management system, engineers and designers typically adopt a logical folder structure using a server to store their data. However, as designers join and leave the design team, this folder structure can become more difficult to maintain, and causes common problems.
This paper explores how organisations - from the single designer to the workgroup, and then to the entire organisation - can use and benefit from product data management using Autodesk Vault, including:
- Accessibility to data and maintaining a single source of truth
- Teamwork and collaborative design
- Reduction in non-value adding work
- Enterprise scalability and office integration
- Process automation and change management.
