A container ramp is a simple device designed to assist in the safe unloading and loading of goods from containers. The simple structure enables fast positioning and easy transportation in all conditions.
Designed for a single task, container ramps are provided with handy flip-up pockets or handles to also manual setup and adjustment. To securely fix the ramp with the container a safety chain is provided that can be hooked onto the container. Ramps often have a self-levelling lip to allow operation on slightly uneven ground.
Unlike the rubber ramps, due to their large size and weight container ramps also have forklift fork pockets allowing them to be transported by forklift. To allow access to the fork pockets the ramp footing needs to be folded up, this fold-up can easily be done by hand. The outer surface is fully enamel painted for protection against rusting. To reduce the fatigue on the ramp a tread plate decking is provided underneath the ramp.
Depending on the load capacity a 5 to 7 tonne capacity ramp can cost from $1,300 to $1,700 and an 8 to 10 tonne capacity ramp can cost from $2,500 to $4,500.
The following criteria must be considered before buying a container ramp:
Container ramps require little maintenance until some parts break due to wear or an accident. General cleaning includes keeping the ramp dust free, having no oil or lubricant on the top surface, and no sharp edges or external objects on the top surface that can damage the forklift or goods being loaded.
Container ramps are classified on their load capacity; 5-tonne ramp, 7 tonnes, etc.
Due to their size and weight, container ramps can not be safely moved without a forklift and are not easy to install or move in confined spaces. They can adjust according to slightly uneven ground but any uneven surface seriously affects their performance.
There is no need for any training or certification related to container ramps. As they need a forklift for installation and movement so forklift driving and operating training is a must.
It all depends on the area of application and load capacity needed. Steel is used for the highest load capacity whereas aluminium is used for easy handling but low load capacity. Rubber and composite are also available.
