Enware has recently released a new whitepaper addressing the need to push the ‘Changing Places’ initiative.
Changing Places is an initiative which aims to expand the facilities available for people with severe disabilities and their carers, giving them more opportunities to enjoy day to day activities and the freedom to be part of the general community, improving their physical and mental wellbeing; which they may otherwise miss out on because appropriate toilet and changing facilities are unavailable.
Our Whitepaper aims to increase awareness and create greater interest amongst the Australian Building & Design Industry. Although Building regulations mandate the integration of disabled friendly features in building design to improve accessibility, most conventional accessible toilets are not sufficient for those with a severe disability. Existing accessible bathrooms do not fully cater for children and adults with profound disabilities; often the process of caring for a person with a significant disability within a public bathroom is humiliating and degrading with carers often left with no option but to change people on the floor of public bathrooms. Not only is this unhygienic and undignified but from a practical perspective it may also put the carer in a position where they could strain or injure themselves.
A Changing Places toilet must provide a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system, space for a person with a disability, two carers as well as a non-slip floor in a safe and clean environment. Enware’s Nursing Bench is an ideal addition for a “Changing Places” accessible bathroom.
Currently there are 6 Changing Places in Victoria mostly in high profile locations such as Rod Laver Arena, MCG and Melbourne Zoo. The Western Australia Government has recently committed to $2 million to establishing a network of Changing Places across the state.
Enware is a primary Australian supplier of specialist Changing Places equipment, and an industry champion of Changing Places Australia, leading the commercial supply of the specialist equipment into the sector and being a proud supporter since Changing Places was first introduced to Australia.
