For Boeing Aerostructures, the bonding of its composite / aluminium wings was a forest of heat lamps before one of its engineers set to thinking that there must be a better way.
As part of his investigations he approached SBH Solutions who was only too willing to assist. Starting initially with a standard HHD drum heater, trials were carried out in the factory which proved that the concept of one blanket laid flat would help cure the sealant bonding the composite parts of a wing together.
A custom design specification was agreed, manufactured and delivered within 3 weeks following the trials. It proved to work a treat and subsequently further units have been delivered for the composite wings as well as the 787 rudder.
SBH Solutions is only too happy to assist engineers with tricky heating problems.
