• Easy refuelling. Remove the empty tank, and replace it with a full one; it doesn’t get any easier than that. LPG means no refuelling downtime with idol workers and production grinding to a halt.
• Availability. There’s no shortage of LPG forklifts on the market meaning buyers have plenty of models to choose from and, generally, easily accessible replacement parts.

• Maneuverability. Or rather a lack of it. Electric forklifts have a far smaller turning circle than their larger, more cumbersome LPG, diesel and petrol counterparts. LPG units also take longer to stop, so if space and aisles are both on the small side, an LPG forklift may not be an option.
• LPG costs. With prices forever on the rise, who knows what LPG will cost this time next year?

A basic LPG forklift costs around $9,000, but more reliable models with greater lifting and load capacities are about $19,000. An exceptional LPG forklift with every feature known to man costs about $50,000.

Here are some common forklift issues and what normally causes them.

• Steering problems due to badly aligned tyres, worn gears, rusty steering or just bad steering fluid transmission.
• Lifting problems due to low hydraulic fluid levels.
• Worn tyres due to a constantly heavy workload.
• Worn suspension for the same reason.
• Overheating problems due to issues with the coolant system or radiator.

Forklifts are vehicles that can lift heavy loads. Maintaining them is therefore mainly the domain of trained forklift mechanics.

However, there are a few things operators can do to keep an LPG forklift in peak condition and help keep mechanic costs down.

• Clean the entire forklift daily. Before each shift, use a dry rag to wipe away dirt, dust and oil.
• Check these components daily – brakes, forks, controls, tyres and hoses.
• Check the LPG tank for leaks daily.
• Conduct a thorough check of all parts every month.
• Change the oil every three months.
• Stick to the scheduled maintenance program.
