Along with the computer and antibiotics, air conditioning is considered one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century. The ability to control temperature, humidity, dust and fumes in a variety of agricultural, commercial and industrial processes has a major effect on human comfort and performance.

Student engineers training for careers involved in the design, operation or servicing of air conditioning plant must be completely familiar with the processes occurring between air inlet and its discharge to the conditioned space.

The Hilton Air Conditioning Laboratory Unit A660 is an expandable teaching and experimental unit that enables students to investigate the basic air conditioning processes of heating, cooling, humidification, de-humidification and air movement that are of fundamental importance to undergraduate engineers.

The addition of optional upgrades, which may be added at any stage in the units extensive life, allow students to investigate air re-circulation and mixing, computer monitoring, dynamic humidity and temperature control and the environmental control of a test chamber.

Specifically, the unit enables students to control a wide variety of parameters via ten switches on the front panel and conduct measurement of air psychometric condition using wet and dry bulb sensors before and after humidification, de-humidification, heating and cooling. The schematic diagram mounted on the front of the unit enables students to understand in what order these processes occur and where measurement points are located. The large format A3 psychometric chart supplied as standard enables student to understand how to interpret the various readings they have taken to calculate the enthalpy of the airstream.

The optional R100 Universal Pressure-Enthalpy Software Upgrade. Software, for use with the A660, optional AC661A Hilton data logger and a (locally-sourced) computer, gives animated (real-time) pressure-enthalpy cycle diagram as well as component energy balances where appropriate, thereby automating the process of data acquisition.

It complements the hardcopy psychometric chart by automating data-logging for use by students who have grasped the basic principles and wish to automate further data acquisition, for example for student projects. Data is recorded as a .csv file enabling students to export, save, edit and print results using Microsoft Excel or similar.
