Pyrosales Hazardous Area Temperature Sensors

There are two main methods used in Australia that conform to the applicable standards and are approved for use in those areas.

  • Intrinsically safe Ex 'ia
    • One in which any spark or any thermal effect produced in the conditions specified in AS-NZS 60079.11-2002
    • Include normal operation and specified fault conditions
    • Is not capable of causing ignition of a given explosive gas atmosphere
  • Explosion-proof (Ex 'd')
    • Provides the type of protection for electrical equipment in which the enclosure will not suffer any damage if there is an internal explosion of a flammable mixture, which has penetrated into the interior.
    • In the event of an explosion occurring, the flamepath to the outside atmosphere needs to be of sufficient length to ensure that the escaping gases cannot ignite the gases in the external atmosphere.
    • It is now a requirement that a sensor installed in an Ex ‘d’ application needs to be approved for use in this area. The following assemblies are SAA approved for use in Ex ‘d’ installations.

TYPE ISA

The ISA style assembly has a SS head plug either welded or silver soldered to the sensor. The compression fitting is optional.

  • Sensor Type: RTD (Pt100 or PT500)
  • Thermocouple (T,K, J, E, N, B, R or S)
  • Diameter: 3mm, 6mm, or 8mm
  • Maximum Length: 15 metres
  • Type of Protection: Ex ‘d’ IIC

TYPE ISE

(Same as ISB) The ISE style assembly has a SS nipple, either welded or silver soldered to the sensor.

  • Sensor Type: RTD (Pt100 or PT500)
  • Thermocouple (T,K, J, E, N, B, R or S)
  • Diameter: 3mm, 6mm, or 8mm
  • Maximum Length: 15 metres
  • Type of Protection: Ex ‘d’ IIC

TYPE ISM

The ISM style assembly is a spring loaded assembly that is intended to be mounted into a thermowell. There is a specially designed hex nipple that  provides the flamepath. The spring loaded assembly is normally supplied with a nipple and union to connect to a thermowell, however can be supplied without.

  • Sensor Type: RTD (Pt100 or PT500)
  • Thermocouple (T,K, J, E, N, B, R or S)
  • Diameter: 6mm
  • Type of Protection: Ex 'd' IIC.

All assemblies can be supplied with 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 way terminal blocks.
A range of Moore Industries transmitters are approved for use in these assemblies.
As a variation to this approval, a BH (large) head can be provided. This can be supplied with a solid or glass window head for local indication.
